New Speech Apraxia Update with Landon

What the heck!? I have not written an update on Landon in many months. I don’t know what’s wrong with me because there has been so much to share! I don’t even know where we last left off on but he has improved so much. Surprising everyone and when I talk to some people about his progress they start crying. It’s so nice to know Landon has so many supporters that love him.

This past summer he just progressed in leaps and bounds. In his IEP for this year we made a point that he needs a way to be able to express him non-verbally to respond to questions in class. Well in his IEP progress report that his Speech Therapist sent us a little while ago… that had a N/A under it. BECAUSE he is VERBAL. He can talk so much now and has so many words. It’s amazing the progress he has made in less than a year.

Landon at the Holiday Train Show

I remember starting this Speech Apraxia journey with Landon back right around when he turned 3. The crying that I used to do when I was alone. The hopelessness that I felt. I have so much hope now. It wasn’t as bad as it could have been. I’m just so glad that Landon’s only issue was Speech Apraxia because a lot of other kids don’t have pure Speech Apraxia. He’s interacting normally with kids now. He can stick up for himself and express why he didn’t like something. Amazing.

I tell him often how proud I am of all the hard work he did in speech to be able to talk. Asking him often if he likes being able to talk now. The things that he’s thinking about is just so wonderful to hear! Though he does talk a little bit too much sometimes, and he needs to learn the rules of conversation, I’m glad we are even at this stage now! I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

Landon wasn’t going to allow me to take a video of him… but I bribed him by telling him I would play some Minecraft with him that worked like a charm. Of course he was all over the place in the video and sat as far away from the camera as possible so I hope it comes out alright! (Waiting for it to upload so I can edit it so I can finish this post up!)

Just being able to communicate with him has been a blessing. He’s always hated the doctor ever since he had to get 3 crowns put on his front teeth back when he was around 2. Recently we had to go to the Dr because he had an ear infection, which I diagnosed at home with my trusty otoscope, and he was freaking out about going. I was able to have a discussion with him to find out why he was freaking out. He thought he was going to get a shot! I let him know that he wasn’t going to be getting one and they were just going to make him feel better. Helped so much to be able to talk about what was causing him worry!

Going on vacations is much more fun with him talking! We are even hearing about what he remembers of past times we’ve been to the place since we’ve gone to each of our vacations numerous times over the years.

Landon and Hunter

Before it didn’t feel like I had 2 kids. It felt mainly like I had one because Landon was pretty easy going since he was non-verbal. NOT ANYMORE! He’s told Hunter “Hunter you lying.” Just the bickering they are having I enjoy because I didn’t have that before! BTW having 2 verbal kids is rough with the bickering haha.

Little things that others probably take for granted I notice and bask in the glory of Landon now being verbal. He used to only tell me that he loved me. Which was HUGE. It took a little over 5 years for Landon to say that to me. One of the best things a mother could hear is that her child loves them. I cried and had the biggest smile on my face and told him to keep telling it to me! Now he tells Hunter he loves him and slowly but surely he’s saying it to Cory as well. I did like that it was my special thing though.

Him even interacting with the dog now is fantastic! He’ll tell Waffles to sit and the dog sits! Can’t be too hard to understand him if the dog gets it… or maybe Waffles just wanted the treat Landon had in his hand and he knows what to do to get it.

Sorry if this post is just all over the place! I need to do a better job of updating because there has been just so much improvement that I’m trying to get the point across with how well he’s progressed! Trying not to forget any little thing because there is just so much. His whole world is open to him now.

I’ll try to do better with updating from now on! Also if this is the first post you’ve seen of Landon and his Speech Apraxia you can check out all of the posts I did by using the Speech Apraxia category I have under Personal. (Or just click the Speech Apraxia that is linked, I’ll make it easy for you all!)

Thank you all so much for your kind words and those that have reached out to me via email! It’s been wonderful sharing this journey with you and for all those out there that know someone that has Speech Apraxia never give up hope!
